DUBAI: As Schengen visa delays continue to disrupt travel plans across the UAE, many residents are now turning to the United Kingdom as their summer destination of choice.

The British Government’s fast-tracked visa solutions, namely the ‘Priority’ and ‘Super Priority’ services, are gaining traction for offering decisions within five working days or even by the next working day in some cases.

This sudden surge in interest comes at a time when many applicants have reported difficulty in securing appointments for Schengen countries, extended timelines, and long queues at VFS Global, which handles visa applications for most European nations in the UAE. In contrast, the UK has streamlined its visa offerings, providing residents with reliable, rapid alternatives to make holiday planning less stressful.

Fast-track options

Super Priority Visa Service: The fastest route for those hoping to visit the UK on short notice is the Super Priority Visa Service. According to the UK Home Office, this service promises a decision by the end of the next working day following a biometric appointment – extending to two days if the appointment falls on a weekend or UK public holiday.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Processing time: Typically within 1 working day
  • Additional cost: £1,000 (approximately Dh5,000) on top of the visa application fee
  • Eligibility: Available for most short-term visitor visas, work permits, student applications, and settlement requests

Applicants are reminded that eligibility must be checked during the online application process. Once the Super Priority option is selected and the necessary biometric data has been submitted, a response is generally issued by the following day – barring any need for additional documentation or identity verification by UK authorities.

Priority Visa Service: For those who are not in a critical rush, the Priority Visa Service offers a slightly more affordable expedited option. It ensures a decision within five working days and is well-suited for leisure travellers, business visitors, and students who have a few days to spare.

Key details include:

  • Processing time: Usually within 5 working days
  • Additional cost: £500 (approximately Dh2,500)
  • Start date: From the date of the biometric appointment or the submission of documents via the UK Immigration app

In both fast-track services, every applicant – including family members – must pay separately for a faster decision. The UK Home Office also advises that, in rare cases where more checks are required, results could take slightly longer.

Standard options

In addition to fast-tracked applications, the UK continues to offer a robust selection of Standard Visitor Visas. These visas can be applied for up to three months in advance of the intended travel date and are processed in approximately three weeks following the biometric submission.

The fees for these visas vary based on duration and purpose:

  • Standard visitor visa (6 months): £127
  • Medical treatment visa (11 months): £220
  • Academic visa (12 months): £220
  • Two-year long-term visa: £475
  • Five-year long-term visa: £848
  • Ten-year long-term visa: £1,059

Each of the long-term visitor visas allows a maximum stay of six months per visit and is ideal for frequent travellers or those visiting family in the UK regularly.

All UK visa applications from the UAE must be initiated online via GOV.UK, followed by an appointment at a VFS Global Visa Application Centre in either Dubai or Abu Dhabi to complete the biometric requirements. Applicants can also opt for premium add-ons such as document scanning, home collection, courier delivery, and access to a VIP lounge, depending on their comfort preferences.

Application process

The steps to apply for any UK visa from the UAE are as follows:

  • Online Application: Visit GOV.UK and fill out the visa form.
  • Visa Type: Select the appropriate visa and check all supporting documentation.
  • Biometric Appointment: Schedule and attend an appointment via VFS Global.
  • Processing: Wait for a decision based on the service selected—standard, priority, or super priority.
  • Notification: A decision is communicated via email, with passport return through courier or collection.

For those applying with family members, each individual must submit a separate application and biometric data. The additional fast-track fee applies per person.

In cases where further verification is necessary, applicants will be contacted directly by the UK Home Office, and the processing clock resumes after the requested information is provided.
